Our new educational initiative – Fitted isn’t Finished – was recently featured on BBC Morning Live.

The feature saw DJ legend and hearing aid user Tony Blackburn talking to one of our customers, Karen Hill, about adjusting to hearing aids.

“I first started noticing that my hearing wasn’t as good [as it used to be] about six years ago, and it was really beginning to affect my work and my daily life. So I got myself a hearing aid,” Tony says.

“It sharpens everything up. It’s a game changer. So I was surprised to discover that nearly half of new hearing aid users abandon them for various reasons.”
Those reasons include not getting the right support and not having your expectations properly managed.

“People don’t give a hearing aid enough time to get used to it.” – BBC Presenter Nick Knowles

“Not like a pair of glasses…”

BBC Morning Live presenter Holly Hamilton says, “Your hearing aid is not like a pair of glasses that you put on and it just starts to work straight away. Because a lot of people do think that.”

And Tony Blakburn agrees. “The difference between having a good experience and a bad experience with hearing aids is basically time,” he says. “You’ve got to give it time. If you’re struggling, speak to your audiologist; your concerns will not fall on deaf ears.”

If you’re struggling to get used to wearing a hearing aid, remember: this is entirely normal. Laura Ewen, our Head of Audiology, says, “It’s OK if, to begin with, things feel a little bit loud, or you can’t quite hear in the environments you want to hear.” Your hearing aids can be fine tuned to meet your unique hearing needs.

Our new educational hub is here, packed full of tips and practical advice for getting used to hearing aids, and includes a free, expert guide and detailed planner.
