I was lucky to have a flyer through door offering a free ear-wax appt if booked in January (can't recall if there was an age criteria) First visit was for ear-wax cleaning which I knew I needed as the GP had had a look when I asked about some tinnitus hissing & whistling sounds I had been hearing for a while. I was hopeful that was build up might be part of the cause. The cleaning was with a suction device, much better than the big syringes used years ago! The suction was a bit noisy, like a mini vacuum-cleaner with a long tube - the main small unit was a bit away from me & the noise level was fine. It also felt fine in my ear, she was very considerate & gentle & not rushing. I had put oil in my ears for 3 days prior, got the dates mixed up so it wasn't 5 days as requested, I had rung up when I realised but she advised to keep the appointment. It was going well but a bit sticky still so she added a squirt extra of the 'Earol' stuff they use (I prefer to use totally natural high quality olive oil but it is a bit thicker & messier)
Grateful she successfully extracted an old discoloured lump of wax, which is good, but hasn't changed the hissing.
It's fun & interesting to see an enlarged digital view of the inside of one's ear canal, as well as being shown a clear picture-disgram of the anatomy of the ears.
As the ear-wax removal was successful I was given an appt for a hearing test 2 weeks later, with Tom, who is also extremely nice, relaxed & calm, knowledgeable, enjoys his work & happy to be asked questions.
This was the first hearing test I have had, now aged 55, which is apparently a good/ average time. He explained the processes, & used a tuning fork first, which I love. The main part of the testing was me in a cubicle with a big window, headphones on, a handheld stick thing to hold with a button on the top to press when I heard sounds. I don't really like confined spaces tho am not really claustrophobic, but it was fine, quite comfy actually, & I enjoyed the experience. We then looked at the results as a graph on an elevated computer screen. I'm doing ok at the moment, slight loss of hearing in the upper ranges, but that's quite common apparently. Recommended & booked an appointment for another test to check it, in 2years, plus reminders nearer the time!
