What's involved in a hearing test
If you have not had a hearing test before, we realise it can be daunting and that needn’t be the case. A friendly, expert Hearing Aid Dispenser will simply establish the threshold of your hearing and then provide a clear assessment of your hearing and the next steps to take.
Here’s what you can expect from the hearing test process:
-
1. Questions
Aside from the obvious personal details, your Hearing Aid Dispenser will ask about your lifestyle and how your ability to hear affects your daily life. If you’ve had hearing tests in the past, they might also ask you about those too.
-
2. Examination
Your Hearing Aid Dispenser will need to check that there is nothing preventing them from carrying out a thorough hearing test. It is not unusual for the Hearing Aid Dispenser to refer clients to their G.P. to have their ears syringed before they are able to conduct the test.
-
3. Assessment
The hearing test itself involves a process called’ audiometry’ – and it’s nothing to be worried about! Your hearing Aid Dispenser will simply explain what you need to do, then place a pair of headphones on your ears (the latest generation of audiometers use insert earphones). You are asked to respond every time you hear a sound, and the audiometer will record the quietest sound you can hear over a range of frequencies.
-
4. Explanation
Your hearing test results are plotted on a graph called an audiogram, which will be explained by your Hearing Aid Dispenser. They will show you the degree of any hearing loss revealed and talk through the options available to you – setting you on the right track to hearing properly again.
