Why does our hearing get worse?

08/08/2011

Inside our inner ear we have thousands of tiny hair cells.  These receive sound signals around us and pass them to the brain.

Each hair cell is ‘tuned’ to a particular frequency.  Over time, and through exposure to noise (loud or otherwise), some cells wear out whilst others continue to work OK.  So for most people, finding it a bit harder to hear is just normal wear and tear.

As the cells wear out, we hear some frequencies better than others, and some sounds become muffled or people seem to mumble.  That’s what can make it especially hard to hear conversations in certain situations, whilst not in others.

Should you feel your hearing is not as good as it once was, book a free, no obligation hearing test today.  Either book online or call 0800 740 8706.
