Tips on listening in noisy environments

29/09/2011

If you struggle to hear in noisy environments, read our handy tips below!

  • This may seem like an obvious answer, but if you are struggling to hear someone speak, move closer to them.  When you move closer, the sound will automatically be amplified and you will find it easier to hear what the other person is saying.
  • When eating out at a social gathering, try to position yourself in the centre of the group, so you can be prepared for whatever direction the next conversation will come from.  Try and avoid sitting at the end of a table where the sound will have a longer distance to travel.
  • If you know you will be socializing in a noisy environment, try and steer the group away from the noisiest areas such as next to the bar, close to the kitchen or by the entrance where foot fall is high.
  • Consider arriving early, ahead of the group allowing yourself to find a suitable spot to meet, or, if in the cinema for instance allowing you time to ask if there is a best place to sit, for example near the speakers.
