Myths about Hearing Loss

22/08/2011

If I had a hearing loss the doctor would have pointed this out to me?
Truth – only a small number of GPs offer regular hearing screenings as part of their services.  Also, many people with a hearing loss can hear adequately in quiet one to one situations such as in the doctors consulting room, masking any visible evidence.

Nothing can be done about my hearing loss
Truth - People with hearing loss in one ear, with a high-frequency hearing loss, or with nerve damage may have been told by their family doctor that nothing can be done to help. Modern technology has changed that. Now, nearly 95 percent of people with hearing loss can be helped, most with hearing aids.

Only people with serious hearing loss needs a hearing aid
Truth – Your lifestyle and level of hearing loss will determine whether a hearing aid would be of use.  Even people diagnosed with a mild hearing loss can lose up to 25-40% of conversational speech.  If this was you, wouldn’t you want to hear everything and not just guess what people are saying?

Hearing aids are big and ugly. Wearing one will make me look old or disabled.
Truth – Modern hearing aids have come a long way, and if you are not familiar with the latest technologies it is likely that you remember images of your grandparent’s hearing aids a number of years ago – big, beige bananas!  Don’t worry – technology has progressed in enormous leaps and bounds, many models of hearing aids are so small you cannot even see them.  Larger ones (I say larger and use the term very loosely) come in a wide variety of colours to suit and match skin tone and hair colour.  There is also SoundLens, released earlier this year which is the world’s first totally invisible hearing aid when worn!  It sits around the second bend of the ear canal meaning no one can see it!  Now that is a big leap for Hearing Aid technology!
