Just how mild exactly, is a mild hearing loss?

15/08/2011

After months of comments and persuasion from your close friends and family members, you decided to finally get your hearing tested.  You have a hearing loss – but good news (you think)… It’s only a mild one… but just how mild is a mild hearing loss?

The term ‘mild hearing loss’ is defined as a hearing loss between 26 and 40 dB in the speech frequencies.  Put into context, a person with a 25-30dB hearing loss can miss 25-40% of the speech sounds depending on the environmental situation within which the conversation occurs.  The individual with the mild hearing loss will also lose the ability to selectively hear sounds in challenging and noisy environments whilst having difficulty suppressing background noise.  In a normal, healthy ear, this function is done automatically, part controlled by the nervous system.

A mild hearing loss can cause huge communication issues making conversation and social activities very difficult.  But it doesn’t stop there, it is also common for people to complain of headaches, fatigue and irritability due to the concentration required to understand conversation.

So I repeat the question – how mild is a mild hearing loss?  The answer, not very.  If you are suffering do something about it and discuss your options with one of our hearing aid dispensers.  Simply book online, or call 0800 740 8706.
