Does diet play a role in hearing loss?

23/09/2011

These days we are much better educated on what we should and shouldn’t eat, along with the health benefits of doing so, but one question we get asked is does diet play a part in hearing loss?

Firstly, it is important to note that hearing loss is a totally naturally occurrence with factors including age and exposure to loud noises playing an important factor.  There are however, some benefits reported which have been found relating to food types and hearing loss, for example Omega 3 and Vitamin D.

Foods which contain high levels of vitamin D and omega 3 fats (such as salmon and sardines) have been noted to have positive effects on hearing loss.  In recent studies adults who ate fish more than twice a week were 42% less likely to face age related hearing loss issues.  The reasoning behind this is that the omega 3 fats strengthen the blood vessels in the ears sensory system.

It is important to note that food types should not be seen as a cure or prevention and if hearing loss is an issue help should be sought from a qualified expert.
