Before you come for your hearing test, it'll be helpful to think about the following:

You may have noticed that we ask you to bring a friend or family member to your hearing test. When you have a hearing loss, it can sometimes be difficult to know its extent. Any additional insight into your hearing can be invaluable for our hearing care experts when it comes to finding the right solution for you.

When you bring someone with you, we’ll also be able to carry out a ‘familiar voice test’. Your friend or relative will read out a number of words from a list and, without being able to look at them, you’ll have to repeat the words back.

During the hearing test, one of our hearing care experts will take a look inside your ears using an otoscope. This instrument is designed to see whether you have any obstructions or ear infections that might be temporarily affecting your ability to hear properly. In many cases, hearing loss issues are simply a build-up of too much ear wax.

You'll then be asked to listen to several sounds, usually a series of beeps, set at different frequencies. This is to find out whether you have trouble hearing certain types of sounds. This part of the hearing test is known as 'audiometry’.

You may then be presented with a list of words, which will be read out to you, and which you will then be asked to repeat. This part of the hearing test is known as the ‘Familiar Voice Test’, and this is when we will ask your friend or family member to take part in the testing, so that we can assess how well you understand a familiar voice.

What to expect at a hearing test

The results from your hearing evaluation will be shared with you and recorded on an audiogram. This is a graph that shows your hearing thresholds for different frequencies.

Your results will tell us  if you have an audible hearing loss or not. Based on the hearing test, our experts will provide recommendations on next steps and what hearing care solutions might be right for you.

If your results show that you have a hearing loss, our expert will recommend a form of hearing loss treatment. If the treatment involves hearing aids, you'll have the opportunity to see and test different types of hearing aids, depending on your hearing loss and lifestyle. 

If you decide that you would like to get a hearing aid, a separate appointment will then be booked to fit your hearing aids and help you get used to them.

An online hearing test and a hearing test at a clinic with a certified professional are two different things. 

An online hearing test is a quick test of your hearing and gives an indication of how well you hear and whether a hearing test with one of our experts would be beneficial for you. 

A hearing test at one of our clinic is carried out by a registered hearing care expert. It gives you detailed information on how well you hear and whether you could benefit from wearing hearing aids. You'll get advice and recommendations based on your results. A hearing test at a clinic is for those who think they might have a hearing loss and/or already have hearing aids.

A hearing test is performed by a registered professional and it consists of the following steps:

1. Discussing hearing concerns, medical history, and lifestyle factors
2. Physical ear examination – One of our experts will conduct a visual exam of your ears to understand if there are any medical explanations for your hearing loss
3. Comprehensive hearing test – This includes a series of tests, such as tone, speech, and word tests

A hearing test from a registered hearing care expert is the only way to confirm whether you have hearing loss or not. But there are online hearing screening tests available which can give you an indication of whether you might have hearing loss. While there is no objective test available for tinnitus detection, a hearing care expert can perform tests during a hearing consultation to assess whether you have tinnitus. If tinnitus is detected, they can further assess the nature and severity of your tinnitus.

In most cases, once a year. If you've been fitted with hearing aids and have stable hearing, you should see us once a year for a regular check-up and to adjust your hearing aids if necessary. In some cases, if your form of hearing loss requires more frequent monitoring, a hearing care expert may recommend you come to see us more regularly.

Your hearing care expert will go through and explain the results from the series of tests they performed when assessing your hearing. Most audiograms are plotted on graphs with pitches on the horizontal axis and loudness on the vertical axis. As the plots on the graphs go further down the graph, it indicates how much louder the sound signal had to be in order for you to hear the corresponding pitch, which increases along the horizontal axis.
